Session Questions and Responses

Q: Are span tables and radius bending tables available?

A: All decking products are tested and approved for 16” oc installation.  Bending decking with PVC will allow for very tight bends. The exact time, temp and amount of bend will require practice to perfect. I have seen 3.5” deck boards bent into a 24” radius.

Q: Do they make a deck board that can be used on a diagonal with 16" oc joists?

A: TimberTech manufacturers a product called MAX. this is an 1.5” thick board designed to work with 24” oc spacing, and will work on diagonals at 16”

Q: What about UV light?  Have seen some warp from high moisture and UV light.

A: Warping with composites (wood/ plastic core) is typically related to moisture absorption. That’s why we manufacturer our Pro decking with a cap all the way around the board.  Movement in PVC decking is typically related to temperature change not moisture. The effects of hi heat from direct sun and quick cooling are directly related to the amount of expansion and contraction the boards see. Warping/ twisting of PVC should not occur unless the boards are not properly fastened down.

Q: For deck exterior structure or framing, what material is best - real wood or composite.

A: Currently the only options for framing that I am aware of are wood and metal. If using wood, kiln dried lumber will give the best results. The pre-dried boards will not show as much movement after installation which can result in joist undulation even after decking is installed.

Q: We want to make a railing with this synthetic wood, have you done actual railings with gaps in between?

A: I have seen our material used to make railing in the field, but we have not done any testing to understand performance. Typically the material is not structural and would require some type of support.

Q: Is there a local rep for aventura or hollywood florida?

A: Kristopher Michael- 321-200-5599 kris.michael@azekco.com

Q: How do you treat the cut ends of the planks where exposed?

A: TimberTech sells a a product called End Coat. This is an aesthetic product (laytex paint) to hide the core but not necessarily a sealant.

Q: Is there any type of off-gazing with the capped polymer decking?

A: There is no off gassing with capped polymer. We have had limited claims of a plastic smell on new installs in hot sun, but they have all dissipated over time.

Q: Are there any field finish options for AZEK capped material that may need to be trimmed or ripped leaving behind an exposed core face?

A: Nothing currently available. We would recommend to install a ripped edge into the deck, or against the house so as to be hidden.

Q: Can you provide a contact for the South Texas area?

A: Jordan Gater- 570-790-3035 jordan.gater@azekco.com

Q: When cutting a piece to size.  Is there an end treatment required?

A: There is no need to cover cut ends of either capped polymer or capped composite.

Q: Can you give the name for the coating he mentioned that reflected heat off dark colors?

A: Aqua Sur Tech. This was specifically for painting PVC Trim products.

Q: What are the heights and thickness for your fascia matching color boards?

A: Capped polymer- ½” thick,  11 ¾” wide, 12’ long. Capped composite- 9/16” thick, 12” wide, 12’ long.
