Session Questions and Responses

Q: Is Quietrock available to use on ceilings?

Yes, there are ceiling applications where QuietRock is appropriate.  Because ceilings have far more options and components, I generally get our technical services team involved to help identify the correct solution for your projects.

Q: Does the SQFT pricing of $2.70 include the cost of the acoustical sealant?

That does not include sealants or putty, but that cost would be identical across the comparison of the other traditional assemblies.  Proper sealing of a sound rated wall does not matter what the solution is, it is a requirement of ASTM C919.

Q: What is the size and spacing of the screws?

That will be dependent upon the fire-rated assembly configuration, generally, though the size and spacing are the same as regular 5/8” gypsum wallboard:  1-1/2” drywall screws spaced 8” at the perimeter and 12” in the field.

Q: Is there an ICC report for the products covered, today?

There is, and again we’d need to look at the assembly to identify the correct report for your needs.

Q: What about staggered studs that overlap with single top/btm plates?

Need more clarification on the question.

Q: Which side is CLD applied...higher sound or lower sound side?

Generally, it is best to treat the higher sound side to prevent the vibration from getting into the structure.  Having said that, the board is tested bi-directionally and in the lab shows no difference in performance.  I generally advise using it on the side with the fewer penetrations.

Q: Can you apply a thin veneer plaster coat on the CLD panel and what is the impact on STC?

You can.  The beauty of the CLD panel is that it finishes just like gypsum board and can be decorated in any fashion you wish with no impact on performance.

Q: If you are using 3 1/2" studs instead of 3-5/8 studs what is the difference in STC?

The difference would be negligible if there is any difference at all.  A 1/8” should not really matter.

Q: Is it possible to specify the CLD panel system without being proprietary? What is your recommended method?

Yes, there are competitive products out there, so you can specify the class of board and the attributes that you desire.  In our case, you can specify that you want a board with no paper within the interlayers of the lamination for easy installation.  Without naming QuietRock ES, you have essentially eliminated the others in the space.  And, of course, you want to call out the STC performance of the assemblies.

Q: Which wall assembly is better? 2- 3 5/8" with 1" gap or a wood 2x6 plate with staggered 2x4's? I assume the steel assembly.

Yes, the steel option will be better, again, dependent upon the mill thickness of the steel that you are considering.  Contact me directly and we can look at tests that will be on point for your decision.

Q: Did all the different assemblies use the caulking?

In a laboratory environment, they do.  In practice, they should according to ASTM C919.  Based on the volumes that we sell we can tell that it is not always used in the field as required.

Q: We do a lot of renos on existing multifamily projects, typically wood frame. I don't want to remove the existing 1/2 GWB. What would be the best (most affordable) way to increase the STC to 50? Also, on existing floor assemblies with existing 2x10 wood joists.

I’d need to know a little more about your assembly that you are starting with, but generally, I would look at adding 5/8” QuietRock ES over the existing GWB on one side.  That may be enough.  But again, I’d want to ask a few more questions before making a recommendation, please reach out to us to discuss this further.
