Thank You for Attending "Innovative Cement Board Applications with Continuous Insulation"
Presented by National Gypsum – June 3, 2020 – 1:00pm ET/12:00pm CT– AIA 1 LU/HSW
SESSION QUESTIONS & PRESENTER RESPONSES
Q: How complicated is it to make cuts in the job site?
A: Very easy. PermaBase can be cut with a utility knife just like a piece of drywall. The PermaBase CI, because of its thickness can be cut with a circular saw.
Q: What thickness of PermaBase CI is required to achieve R-7.5? Is Z-furring required, or just adhesive to the water barrier?
A: Our PermaBase CI comes a total thickness of 2" so you will get an R-Value of 10. No need for Z furring if using PermaBase CI. Don’t forget a primary sheathing is required.
Q: Do you have an assembly example for a rainscreen system?
A: Yes. Follow this link www.permabase.com/exteriors There you will see videos and designs. Also, see https://nationalgypsum.com/File/PBCI_InstallationGuide.pdf
Q: How many different assemblies have been tested for NFPA 285 approval?
A: All assemblies you saw today meet NFPA 285 requirements.
Q: IBC and GA requirements are very vague concerning fasteners spacing....can you provide some general information about requirements/recommendations?
A: For PermaBase CI we require 8" o.c. spacing.
Q: How can I get a copy of this presentation to share with contractors and builders?
A: Email me at swhughes@nationalgypsum.com and I will be happy to provide a PDF version.
Q: Is there a maximum vertical/shear and horizontal load that can be applied to the cement board?
A: Code allows for a maximum of 15lbs. per square foot on exterior walls and 25lbs. Per square foot on interior walls.
Q: Can the cement board be used for interior applications such as in attic spaces, and can it be painted?
A: Yes. PermaBase can be used as a tile backer board. You can paint it but that is not the intent of the product. The surface does have a texture to it.
Q: Are there fire-rated system details available with the insulation option? Finding systems that mention rigid insulation can be difficult.
A: Yes. PermaBase can be added to any UL Design such as U392 and V438.
Q: Are there system options that include a drainage plane?
A: Yes. Follow this link www.permabase.com/exteriors There you will see videos and designs. Also, see https://nationalgypsum.com/File/PBCI_InstallationGuide.pdf
Q: Could you talk about cement board attachment as a finish material to avoid cracking at attachment?
A: PermaBase is manufactured with reinforced edges so that a contractor can get very close to the edge with the fastener and not "blow it out".
Q: How do you address thermal bridging of fasteners that go thru the insulation to the metal studs?
A: It is an industry acceptance that fasteners may contribute to thermal bridging. At this time, it is unavoidable.
Q: Can you apply directly to CMU or concrete?
A: Yes. Follow this link for details. https://nationalgypsum.com/File/PBCI-InstallationGuidelines-over-Concrete-CMU.pdf
Q: Are there NFPA 285 approvals for Rainscreen systems using aluminum composite panels?
A: Yes. Follow this link to the Evaluation Report https://designcenter.nationalgypsum.com/design-center/category/code-reports
Q: Can it be used with rain screen membrane?
A: Yes. Follow this link www.permabase.com/exteriors There you will see video's and designs.
Q: Do you stagger the cement board vertical joints - necessary or not?
A: Always stagger vertical board joints.
Q: Would any of your sheet products be appropriate for applying to exterior partitions in unheated attic space?
A: I would recommend our XP or eXP Interior Extreme products. See https://nationalgypsum.com/products/Product.aspx?GroupID=184
Q: Can the cement board be curved?
A: Cement board will bend but not as easily as drywall. The PermaBase CI is not intended for bending.
Q: Thickness of cement board - are there minimums?
A: Cement board comes 1/4" for floors and countertops. 1/2" and 5/8". For the systems we talked about today, we use 5/16" board laminated to ISO.
Q: Are fasteners corrosive resistant?
A: Yes. Follow this link for options. www.permabase.com/exteriors
SESSION DESCRIPTION
Cement Board is a universal exterior substrate for a variety of finish materials – stone veneer, brick, stucco, tile to name a few. Attendees will learn about cement boards and their use in exterior applications. The program is focused on Cement Board Stucco Systems (CBSS) and Cement Board Masonry Veneer (CBMV) systems using Continuous Insulation as an option to meet the International Energy Conservation Code requirements. The program reviews CBSS and CBMV components, details and performance benefits for occupant comfort.
PROGRAM LEARNING OBJECTIVES
As part of this course, participants will:
1. Understand how Cement Board Masonry Veneer system and their components compare with conventional masonry veneer installation methods and the effects on building energy usage.
2. Understand how to utilize Continuous Insulation with Cement Board Masonry and Cement Board Stucco systems to contribute to occupant comfort.
3. Learn how Cement Board Masonry Veneer systems reduce material costs and environmental impact over traditional systems.
4. Learn how the features and performance benefits of Cement Board Stucco Systems, using continuous insulation, compare to traditional stucco systems as it relates to ease of installation and environmental impact.
