Q: What are the pros and cons of linear drains vs round drains?

A: I would say the one thing with a linear drain, you can only make thresholds, and a linear drain opposed to a round drain, you don't have to slope from all corners.  With a linear drain, its all sloping in one direction. 

Q: Does a universal valve mean that it works with all brands or manufacturers?

A: The short answer is no.  In general, manufacturers don't cross lines of putting together a trend with someone else's valve.

Q: How do you know what the water pressure is at a given location?

A: Couple ways to do that: you could call a local municipality to get average water pressure in that area, a plumbing contractor, and lastly there are expensive devices that you could attach to a garden spicket to see what the pressure is

Q: If you're trying to decide which valve to specify, how do you know what the flow rate is on a particular valve?

A: I would refer you back to the website of that company.  You can go back to the website and generally those manufacturers have specification sheets.  Generally, it is important to know how to put the components together if you have a particular valve with a particular cartridge.  The cartridge really determines the flow rate.
